First, preheat your oven to 400ºF.
Second, in a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Use two forks or your hands to mix everything thoroughly.
Third, season generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Then mix in the Italian breadcrumbs and the egg until the mixture is well combined.
Fourth, transfer the beef mixture to an 8-inch square baking dish and press it into an even, compact layer.
Fifth, spread the cold mashed potatoes evenly over the beef layer.
Sixth, top the mashed potatoes with grated sharp cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon or bacon bits.
Seventh, cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
Eighth, remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden on top.
